X-Men: First Class

I did not want to see this movie, but just like with that Natalie Portman/Ashton Kutcher movie I don’t even remember the name of, my friend Pam invited me and I said okay.

I had liked the first X-Men all right, since there was a generous amount of Hugh Jackman in it. Then the second one sucked. Then there was another that was apparently almost all Hugh Jackman, and I didn’t even give a shit anymore. There may even have been further X-Men movies and I don’t remember them.

But this one. This one rocked! I loved every minute of it. I don’t know all the mythology of the X-Men story. Mostly I just know that Prof X and Magneto used to be friends and now they’re not, and Magneto doesn’t like non-mutants. For a brief period in college I watched the cartoon, so I know a little about Jean Grey and Storm and maybe some guy with cards? But they weren’t in this movie (maybe there was a hint about them, but they did not play a part in the plot).

Anyway, this movie is excellent. It’s perfect. And it introduced me to Michael Fassbender, for which I will be forever grateful to it. Mr. Fassbender’s performance made me decide that, hey, Magneto really has a good point. I think I’ll be on his side.

The story was great. The acting was great. (I’m seeing a lot of dissing of January Jones, and I don’t really care much about her; I’ve heard stories of her being a bitch in person, and I don’t watch Mad Men, so that’s about all I know about her. But I don’t think the role she was in here demanded much.) The action and effects were great. I don’t know what else to say. Oh, the people were all very pretty. All of them. Very. Pretty.

So go see it.

Doug Benson and Graham Elwood

I got to see Doug Benson live again. I’ve seen him a few times in the past several months. Once when I managed to get into the SXSW Benson Interruption, and now twice doing standup. I like the way he does have a core of written stories he delivers, but he also bookends his set with stuff that involves the audience.

This time, he read tweets people had been posting right before the show. One guy apparently wrote, “Why are there so many weathered women at the Doug Benson show? Goddamn.”

Then at the end, he did the Leonard Maltin game. I even brought a big sign with my name on it this time, but I didn’t get called up, and then the first guy won, so I didn’t get a second shot at it. I had cut out my name in origami paper and stuck it on a folder. Not the best sign ever, but better than the Sharpie on a napkin I did last time.

So Doug was predictably great, and my real excitement was reserved for Graham Elwood. I listen to his Comedy Film Nerds podcast (and you should, too). He’s energetic on stage and tells great stories, and I got a Palm Strike t-shirt and took a picture with him afterward. He’s cute, too.

The local guy from the comedy club who introduced the show was pretty sucky, I’m sorry to say. I felt bad for him. He had no magnetism on stage, and he told “jokes,” as in one- or two-liners. I very much prefer the story-telling style of standup, but the “jokes” can be funny. Just not this time.

Then there was an opener who was from OK City. I sort of groaned when they introduced him, assuming that a comedian based in OK City wouldn’t be very funny. But he was! He had some amazingly funny bits, and I will keep an eye out for him in the future: Brad Chad Porter.

Exit Through the Gift Shop

I know everyone else watched this a year ago, but I just now got around to it. It was not what I expected at all. I thought it was a movie about Bansky. I didn’t realize it was a movie by Banksy about a crazy guy. Or maybe a hoax by Banksy and the crazy guy, who isn’t so crazy. (Just Google the movie title and all you get are articles about whether it’s a hoax.)

I loved it. I felt so squirmy once Thierry started making his own “art.” And while I hope it’s not a hoax because it’s just so perfect, well, maybe it is a little too perfect to be real. And if it’s not real, then I love it a little less. Or maybe I love it MORE. It’s hard to say. Either way, it’s brilliant.

Okay. This is not in ANY WAY safe for work. DO NOT click on this link if you are using a work computer. For one thing, the ads on the page are pornographic. Not just teasingly alluding to porn, but actual porn.

Do not click on this link if you are anywhere near anyone whose opinion you might value. In fact, I’m not even going to admit that I watched the video at this link.

I just … I just wanted you to know that this exists. And that the internet is a wondrous place. And also that I might have had too much to drink at happy hour this evening.

Remember! If you click this link, you cannot unsee what you will have seen. Don’t blame me.

Archer

How is it that I just discovered this? And Netflix is the one that told me about it? Do none of my friends care about me at all?

Chris and I both crashed pretty hard on Friday and instead of working all evening like we had planned, we watched the first half of season 1 of “Archer.” Fucking brilliant. Then we finished the second half on Saturday night. Yeah, we live like motherfucking rock stars.

But seriously—that’s some good shit. The kind of thing that makes me bark laughs a few times an episode out of surprised delight.

Er, I should say that what is a delightful surprise for me is stuff like the secretary having handprints on her neck and the HR chick saying “sploosh” every time she gets horny. Which is often. Maybe a delightful surprise for you is a little fluffy yellow ducky with a bow on its head. These are different types of surprises, so …

Anyway, I’m in love with Lana Kane. Jon Benjamin’s voice is hilarious coming out of Archer’s chiseled face with its ice blue eyes. (Although Chris says Jon Benjamin’s voice is hilarious coming out of anything, and that is truth.) Mrs. Archer is an awesome creation. Cyril is ridiculous. Cheryl and Pam are perfect.

All right. I’ve told you nothing of note. I’m just raving. Wheeeee! Good show.
